Alcohol problem in Bhutan

Yesterday when I was going through my pictures that I took in the last one year I was quite surprised.  I have taken pictures of these people. All of them were drunk, lying in the Thimphu Street. And here Sonam Jatso has rightly pointed out:

"We need to deal with alcohol problem in our country soon. It is destroying our people—our families, our youth, our children, and our society. I hope and pray that the next government—elected leaders and parliamentarians—takes this up on a top priority."

Note: The last two pictures were taken by Sonam Jatso and Tashi Namgay respectively.

  1. A serious issue indeed! I hate what a man becomes when he is drunk too much. If we know how to control, I don't have a big problem. But we always fail to know the limit. :( Saying 'no' to it is the only way out. And solutions to ensure that we say 'no' is hard to find. Your pictures narrated a story interestingly, a story of how what alcohol does to man. Thanks for sharing. Keep posting, Rikku sir.

  2. Pray there be no women on the ground. The situation would be worse.

  3. Hope our policy makers will look into it from different angle. We can't afford to waste valuable human resources like this....

  5. Sir,It's Sonam Jatso from Lhuentse.
WHO report revealed that Bhutan has the highest alcohol consumption figures in south Asian regions. Moreover, according to the records maintained by the Health Ministry, alcohol related disease ranked second in inpatient death in the year 2004 to 2008 ( excerpt from my Company's research)

  6. And the good news is, there has been 10 stakeholder's meeting. With grueling brainstorming, consultation at community level trough pilot project, one national policy on controlling harmful use of alcohol is on the way. It has been submitted to GNHC for screening, and hopefully, the cabinet will endorse by mid 2013..WHO is the major aide..
